Script lettering across upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind wears a pale swimsuit with lavender and cream straps, her dark hair falling to one side. A black handwritten script phrase reads Here comes the sun, running horizontally across the upper back between the shoulder blades. The thin, flowing linework is crisp and uniform in black ink, set against soft turquoise water in the background.

Dear Tom, the Bramleys came down all at once on Tuesday, in the wind before the rain, and I spent the morning on my knees in the long grass gathering windfalls before the wasps got to them. Your grandfather would have had something to say about that. He always said a bruised apple was just a promise kept too long. I have been thinking about him all week, mostly with the radio on in the packing shed, where they keep playing the same three songs. This morning it was the one he used to bellow at the damson trees while he pruned, never once in tune, and I laughed out loud on my own like a fool.

I found his pruning book in the potting shed yesterday, under a tray of old twine. Most of it is dates and which rows wanted hard cutting, in pencil gone silver with age. But near the back he had copied out a line in his careful joined-up hand, the title of that same song, and under it he'd written the date of the first frost of 1987 and the words the fruit knows when to let go. I never knew he had a sentimental bone in him. I suppose he kept it for the trees.

So I am not selling the ladder after all, and I am not sorting the shed until you have come up to help. Bring your good secateurs, the ones you keep telling me are not for children. We will do the late Discovery on Saturday, while the light is still low and gold across the top field.

I have pinned the page to the shed door, where the sun comes through first thing and catches the ink. You can read it when you arrive.

Love, Nan
