Typewriter quote tattoo on a shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a woman's upper back and shoulder, with her dark hair falling near the neck and her face turned away from the camera. Black ink lettering in a typewriter-style font runs diagonally across the skin, reading i was a drizzle and she was a hurricane over two lines. The dark teal background and warm skin tones keep the focus on the crisp black text.

I have typed the readings onto the form three times this morning because the old Imperial sticks on the letter e whenever the damp gets into the bar, and you would tell me to stop fussing and put the kettle on.

I should explain the verse I have been carrying about since you left for Bristol. While hunting for the tide tables I found a line pencilled inside the back cover of your father's old book, in your hand, the letters leaning the way they always did when you were cross. I was a drizzle and she was a hurricane. I laughed when I read it, and then I sat on the bottom stair for an hour with the book open on my knee. You always did want the last word, even in pencil.
The log says the wind will veer south-west by Thursday and the pressure is the lowest this autumn. I have pinned your postcard from the Clifton bridge above the barometer so the glass and the card can argue it out between them. The sea is already coming over the slipway in grey sheets, and the cottage smells of salt and the paraffin heater you swore would kill us both.
If the storm comes, I will shut the shutters and keep the kettle warm. If you come, you will find me at the window with two cups poured, because a drizzle, my love, has never once known how to stay away from weather. Yours, Tom.
