Script lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a forearm with the words "It's get better" written in flowing black script. The letters have smooth, even linework with soft shading in the thicker strokes. The phrase fills most of the frame against a plain skin background, with a blue sleeve along the top right.

Dear Dinah,

You will never believe who turned up to the reunion in the sports hall at Crossley Street. Mr Pollard, looking like a heron left out in the rain, still insisted on the old wording for the banner. Somebody had painted it across the climbing ropes in cream emulsion, in a looping hand, and it read IT'S GET BETTER. Nobody had the heart to correct it, least of all the caretaker, who had spent a whole Thursday on the stepladder.

I stood under it with a plastic cup of squash and thought about the Christmas you cried in the lost property cupboard because your gran had died and I had no idea what to say. I said, badly, that it gets better. You told me to stop being so Hallmark. We were eleven. Thirty years on I did not expect anyone to remember, but Gemma Oakes came up to me by the urn and said, you told me that once, and I didn't believe you either, and then I did.

I haven't stopped thinking about it. I found my old blue jumper at the back of the wardrobe, the one with the frayed cuffs, and pinned Gemma's address to the corkboard by the kettle. Tomorrow I am posting her the spare tin of cream paint Mr Pollard pressed on me at the door, with a note that says exactly what the banner says, spelling and all.

Love, as ever, Maggie
