Script quote along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white close-up of a person's side torso showing two lines of cursive script in black ink, reading The ones that love us never really leave us. The linework is thin and even, and the lettering sits diagonally across the lower ribs with the ink crisp against soft skin shading. A hand is partly visible at the right edge, and the background is dark and out of focus.

Dad kept the log in pencil, every lock and every rain-soaked mile, in a slanted hand that leaned as if walking into a headwind. Most pages were tallies. Mum sold the Marigold the spring I turned sixteen. The new owner wanted the gold lettering scraped off the cabin side, and the signwriter asked if I was sure. I stood on the towpath while he worked, and when the last of the name came away I looked down into the cut. The water had taken my reflection and the boat's stern together, and for a moment the letters were still there, backwards and wavering, until the ripples flattened and the surface went back to being just water.
