You asked whether I have been past the stile into Harrow Wood. I have, twice now. The path is marked the way you showed me, with white stones on the left and none on the right. Last Sunday, where the beeches thin out, I heard a bell that was not the church bell, low and very far off, and I thought of what Grandfather always said, that the wood keeps its own hours.

Yesterday I went in alone with the lantern and a ball of twine. I tied one end to the stile and let it run out behind me. In the clearing I found a table of flat stones and a cup with rain in it, and on the bark of the old oak someone had cut words, deep and neat: come into the wood with me. I read them twice. Then I wound the twine back up, slowly, the way you taught me to wind a line when you do not mean to be lost.

I have not decided. The loaf is cooling and the lamp wants trimming. If the bell rings tonight, do not send the constable up the lane. Keep the lamp lit in the window and I will either answer it or be home for breakfast. Your loving daughter, Ada.
