Script quote along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script phrase, reading Live You're Life, tattooed horizontally across the side of a torso above the waistband of denim shorts. The lettering uses a flowing, slightly decorative script with varied stroke thickness and small flourishes on some capitals. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the framing is tight on the tattoo with the wooden background visible at the edges.

Ada had the gold leaf laid on the L and was blowing softly on it when Mr Pruett came in from the rain, read the chalk draft pinned to the bench, and said, "That's wrong."

"It's what the lady wrote," Ada said. "Live, you're life. Three words, one apostrophe, paid in advance."
"She means your." He took off his spectacles and wiped them on his waistcoat, which only made them worse. "Who's going to stand in the window of the Wheatsheaf Tearooms, read that, and not think we were drunk?"
The lady in question had a whippet called Mabel and a quarrel with the parish council, and she had already left a tenner on the counter. Ada looked at the draft again. The capitals swung out like a rope bridge, the Y had a tail that wanted to catch the L, and the apostrophe sat above the gap like a fly that had landed and then reconsidered.
She dipped the brush, lifted the apostrophe out of the gold, and set it back in the wrong place on purpose, just to see what a sentence looked like when it was nearly right. Mr Pruett groaned. The rain kept on. Next morning the sign went up over the door, and by lunchtime half the town had stopped to read it, and nobody once corrected the spelling, which Ada decided was the best advert the Wheatsheaf ever had.
