Script quote and winged diamond on ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Three lines of fine cursive script sit across the side of the torso, with a diamond shown in outline and shading at the centre of a pair of feathered wings below. The lettering is crisp and the wings use soft grey shading, while the diamond has clean linework and light facets. The image is a close, slightly angled phone photo with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a patterned bedsheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on Hollin Cross since dawn, and by noon the cobbles shone like wet slate. Ada Penrose kept her eggs under a tarpaulin and her temper under her coat, because a market in the rain was no place for either to be seen. When the stranger with the tray of cut glass stopped beside her stall, she did not look up. He set a stone on her crate anyway, a diamond the size of a sloe, and said it was payment for a debt her father had never owed.

Ada turned the stone over. Set beside it in a little pewter cradle were two wings, cut fine and grey as pigeon feathers. Inside the facets someone had scratched three lines, too small to read until the rain caught them. Life the live you love. Love the live you life. Live every second. Her grandmother had spoken that way too, saying things backwards so a child would have to think to hear them. The stranger tipped his hat, as strangers do in stories, and walked off between the stalls, and the rain closed behind him like a door.

She did not sell the eggs that day. She packed the crate, carried the stone to the saddler's where the light was better, and asked him to cut it true. He laughed and said a diamond had no business on a bridle. Ada said it had wings, and wings had no business sitting still.

When the rain stopped that evening she walked the long road home with her shoes full of water and the stone warm in her palm, counting the seconds aloud until the lamps came on along the river.
