Bosun Riley called him a menace by Tuesday. Tobias told him the bosun's language was a menace to the galley, and the bosun went quiet, which none of us had seen in eleven years. He talked to the gulls through the porthole, lit the stove with one match, and when the mate reached for a pork pie off the cooling rack, Tobias just stood in the doorway until the mate went red and apologised. Mr Hale chalked it on the slate above the kettle: 'cute but psycho, but cute'. Nobody will own up to writing it first.

Then the swell came up off Flamborough on Thursday. The lamp swung, the rack of stockpots came loose and started toward the stove. Tobias had a hand on the nearest handle before I'd finished shouting, scalded to the wrist and not once complaining. I dressed it with butter and he asked me, quite calmly, whether I wanted the soup saved or the stove.

I said the soup. He saved both. The slate still has its chalk line and I haven't the heart to wipe it. Your loving sister, Margaret.
