GIRL ALMIGHTY lettering on a hip
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells GIRL ALMIGHTY in uppercase letters set on one horizontal line across the side of the hip. The lettering uses solid black ink with even, clean outlines and a simple sans-serif typeface. The photograph is taken close up, with a hand holding teal fabric at the upper left and plain skin filling most of the frame.

The rain had been coming sideways off the river since six, and Marguerite Okonkwo-Hale was still standing under my awning at ten past two, shaking out a bin liner full of wet cardboard. I told her the lentils were going nowhere and she could stop apologising for the weather. She said she wasn't apologising, she was accounting for it, which is the sort of thing you say when you have been on your feet since dawn and want to be taken seriously.

Her daughter Ruby had come to help her pack up, a long-legged girl of about fifteen with a teal jumper knotted at her hip and a face like thunder. Ruby had wanted a tattoo for a month. Marguerite had said no for a month. That morning, apparently, the matter had been settled over a bacon roll, and the words were going on the girl's hip in a shop above the chip place on Mill Lane, in plain black capitals, because Ruby had said she didn't want anything fancy. Just the words. Marguerite said it like she was reporting a minor fraud.
I asked what the words were. Ruby pulled her jumper up an inch and showed me the stencil she had drawn on a torn-off strip of paper, and I laughed so hard a tin of chickpeas rolled off the table. GIRL ALMIGHTY, it said, in the same blunt letters as the sign over my own stall that everyone thinks is a shop name. Marguerite took the paper back, folded it into a neat square, and tucked it into her coat.
She said that when she was Ruby's age her own mother had told her to make herself smaller so the boys could feel tall, and she had spent a decade doing exactly that. Then she looked at the rain for a while and said the girl could have the words, and the girl could have them loud. We loaded the van in silence after that, and the last thing I saw was Ruby sitting on the tailgate, rubbing her hip where the ink would be, grinning at the sky like it had finally done something right.
