Script quote reading Dream as if you'll live forever
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a black script tattoo on skin, reading Dream as if you'll live forever across two lines. The lettering uses a flowing, cursive hand with solid, even strokes and a few decorative loops on the capitals. The ink is grey-black on warm, lightly lit skin, and the text sits centrally with the background softly out of focus.

The last train to Marrowby had been cancelled twice, so Edie sat on the bench under the clock with her suitcase between her knees and watched the departures board flicker through its grey blanks. Across the platform a man was feeding coins into a machine that sold only crisps and bitter lemon. She had come to Carlisle to sign her mother's house over to a developer and had signed everything except the last page, which kept sliding off the clipboard in her head.

Her mother had pinned a card above the kettle for forty years, cut from a birthday calendar, the handwriting slanting and generous. Dream as if you'll live forever. Edie had always thought it was the kind of thing people wrote when they were not planning to be around for the consequences. Her mother had said the opposite, that it meant you should spend your money on the good wool and not the cheap, and that you should leave the washing up for the morning because you might not get one.
The board clicked. Platform four, eleven minutes late. Edie stood, took the suitcase, and at the edge of the platform she turned back and saw the card in her mind, tacked crooked, the kettle steaming under it. She took the pen out of her coat and wrote the last signature on the back of her ticket, large and looping, the way her mother had taught her to make capital letters that looked like they had somewhere to be.
