Halfway across the bridge at Vrbica, where the two customs sheds face each other over the river, there was a clerk called Ilija who kept a notebook of things people said to him while he checked their papers. Not complaints. Not bribes. Small things. A grandmother asked him to tell her grandson the soup was in the blue pot. A lorry driver asked him to remember the name of his dog, in case he forgot it on the far side. Ilija wrote them all in pencil in the margin of the duty log, because pencil does not run when the river rain blows in under the door.

One February a young woman came through with a single case and a face that had been crying on a bus for three hours. She had no stamps to show, only a letter folded into four and a question she did not ask. Ilija stamped her passport slowly, the way you would stir sugar into something bitter. He wrote nothing down. Instead he slid a pencil across the counter and said, in the flat voice they teach you, Write it somewhere it won't wash off if the paper doesn't last. Then he waved her on.

Years later a postcard arrived at the shed with no return address, only a line of black script across the front, looping like a ribbon tied twice: Don't forget to love yourself. Ilija pinned it above the duty log until the card went soft and brown at the corners. That is why, when you cross there now, the guard checks your papers, looks up, and says the thing nobody wrote in the rulebook. Welcome home.
