Script quote tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a handwritten quote in black cursive script that runs diagonally across the inner forearm, from near the elbow towards the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with some words written larger and the final phrase set smaller. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the background is a soft-focus cream sleeve and a blurred neutral backdrop.

Marjorie had the flat of her palm pressed to the glass of the lamp room when the fog came in off the Farne water, thick as wool, and the foghorn started its long complaint. Below them the boats were out. Her son Tom had gone with the Hardy brothers at four, and the radio had gone quiet at half past.

She wrote the time in the log in her square capitals: FOG THICK. LAMP LIT. TOM NOT IN. Then she crossed out NOT IN and wrote nothing after it, because her hand would not do the rest.

Her father had kept this light before her. He used to say the lamp was no use to anyone who had not learned to read the dark, that the sea showed a keeper small hints that ordinary men slept through. Ordinary men, he meant the lads in the pub. He had carved a line into the lintel with a nail and never explained it, only that keepers saw things. She had thought it boastful until the winter the Mary Ann went down off the Inner Sound, when he sat beside her in silence while the beam turned above them and said that the rest of the village had their eyes shut.

At ten past two the beam swept across a shape that was not a rock. A dinghy, oars shipped, and in the stern her boy, laughing at her through the gloom with one hand raised, as if he had spotted her first.

She did not write it in the log. She signed the margin with the date instead, and put the kettle on for the men who would climb the steps at dawn.
