Black script tattoo reading what matters most is how well you walk through the fire, with a peace symbol at the wrist end, on a forearm.

Script quote and peace symbol on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black script quote runs along the inner forearm of a pale-skinned arm, with the initials CB after the final word and a peace symbol at the wrist end. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on the skin. The arm rests on a glossy dark surface that reflects the tattoo, and a cream lace top is visible at the top right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and the wind took the last of the canvas over the car park like a sail gone mad. Mr Pargeter has sold the elephant to a farm near Ludlow, which I suppose is a kind of retirement. I am writing this on the back of a handbill because the ink in my good pen has frozen, and because you asked me last spring what I actually believed about all of it, and I never gave you a proper answer.

Here is one. Your grandfather had the line painted on the side of the caravan in 1961, in letters a foot high, after a fortune teller in Cork refused his money for a reading. It reads: what matters most is how well you walk through the fire. He was never a sentimental man, but he believed it. Every night for thirty years he set the paraffin torches alight and walked the length of the ring barefoot over the embers, and he came out grinning. Under the peace sign he scratched C.B. into the wheel hub with a hairpin, for Cathleen, who taught him to juggle and then left for Belfast with the accordionist.

I am not walking through anything now. I am sitting in the cab with the heater on, watching the lot empty out, and I find I am not frightened of the cold. Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the good kettle. We will light the stove and see who is still standing.

Love, Dad
