Script quote tattoo on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm carrying two lines of black cursive script that read I am not afraid, I was born to do this. The lettering is set in a slightly slanted, handwritten style with consistent weight and clean outlines, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The forearm is held across a lap in ripped light-wash jeans, with a skull bracelet on the wrist and a glittery flat shoe at the edge of the frame.

At the Kessel Bridge crossing the barrier stayed down after midnight, so Ines Varga flashed her headlamps twice and waited with the engine ticking. The guard who came to her window carried a torch in one hand and a clipboard in the other, and he read her manifest the way a schoolteacher reads a wrong answer, slowly and with a kind of hope. "Medical freight at this hour," he said. She told him the valley hospital had run out of insulin and the northern road was shut by snow, which was true for once.

He asked whether she was frightened of the crossing, of the black river under the bridge and the men who sometimes waited in the lay-by with their hoods up. Ines looked at the tin skull swinging from her mirror, a cheap thing her brother had bought at a market years ago that she had never had the heart to throw away. "I am not afraid," she said. Then, because it sounded like a line from a poster, she added, "I was born to do this." The guard laughed, stamped the sheet twice, and waved her through.
The road climbed through pines with the cold boxes humming behind her and the river falling away into fog. She did not think about the guard again until the lights of the valley appeared, small and yellow, like a row of coins someone had dropped and forgotten. At the hospital loading bay a night porter signed for the crates without reading them, and she realised she had been holding the steering wheel so tightly her fingers had gone numb.
She climbed down, stretched her back, and reached up to touch the skull on the mirror. It was still swinging. She let it go on swinging a while before she shut the cab door.
