Script quote tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a black quote, Not all those who wander are lost, set in a flowing italic script across two lines on the side of the ribcage. The letters have fine, even linework with some thicker strokes and light shading, and the ink looks crisp against the skin. A black top and a leopard print band sit above the tattoo, and a hand with silver nail polish and rings rests at the upper left of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been on the market since Tuesday and the awnings sag like wet bellies over the stalls. Mr Fairbairn sold the last of the old charts yesterday, the ones with sea monsters curling in the corners, and he gave me the brass compass from his drawer as if it were nothing. I have it in my apron pocket now. It points north when I remember to hold it flat.
You asked in your last letter whether I have finally gone soft and settled. I have not. I sold the Harwich boatman a tide table this morning and he said the water would be up by six. I believed him, because nobody who sells maps for a living can afford to be wrong about where the road goes.
Still, I keep thinking of the postcard you sent from the coast with only one line across the front, Not all those who wander are lost, written in your slanting hand as if you had been holding the pen in a gale. I pinned it above the counter. Customers read it and laugh, or they go quiet and ask whether I am the one who is leaving. I tell them I am only the one who stays to mind the shop.
The bell over the door has just gone. A man is shaking his umbrella outside and asking for a street plan of somewhere called Tarrant Row, which I do not believe exists. I think I will sell him one anyway, and I will draw the road out of it in ink, so that when you come home there will be a map that knows where you went.
Write soon. Yours in the wet, Hester
