Script quote across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with her head turned away, showing a single line of black cursive text across her upper back, running from the shoulder blade towards the neck. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering reads She flies with her own wings. The skin is warm-toned and the background is softly out of focus.

The snow had shut the pass for three days, and the Crooked Ewe had run out of everything except tea and patience. Upstairs, a lodger called Teddy Oakes had been pacing since breakfast, grumbling at the window as if the moor might be shamed into clearing.

Above the hearth hung a sampler her mother had stitched in red wool, its letters gone the colour of weak tea: She flies with her own wings. Teddy came down for his third cup and read it aloud, slowly, the way people read epitaphs. Was it a boast, he wanted to know, or a warning? Harriet said it had been worked the winter her mother left the mill town with two suitcases and a borrowed bicycle, and that nobody in the family had ever agreed on which.
She lifted the frame from its nail and turned it over. On the cardboard back, in pencil gone silver with handling, was a timetable for the Settle line and a single word, underlined twice: go. Teddy said nothing. Outside, the wind shifted and the window flexed in its frame.
The plough came through at dawn, its orange light sweeping the lane. Harriet propped the sampler against the cash box, where anyone paying their bill would have to read it first.
