A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Penhallow was out on the shingle before the gulls, the way she had been since her husband's boat went down off the Mewstone. The town said it was a sad habit for a widow, scrabbling for broken bottles in the wrack. Her neighbour Joss Carne said so to her face one March morning, standing on the harbour wall with his hands in his oilskin pockets.

"Pebbles, Ada. You've a basket of pebbles."

She didn't look up. She held a piece of green glass to the grey light, turning it until the frosting along its edge caught like milk. "Come down here and see."

"I've seen enough of the sea."

She let him go on his way. That afternoon the wind got up from the south-west, and by dusk the boats were hauled high and the lamp at the end of the quay was the only light left burning. Joss's youngest, Tom, had been sent to fetch mooring rope from the stores and got caught in the lee of the wall when the sea came over. Ada found him wedged in the rocks at low water, cold and crying, his cheek scraped raw.

She carried him up the steps and sat him by her range. When he stopped shaking he asked why she kept the glass, and she set a green piece on the windowsill where the last of the lamplight came through. He saw only a bottle's bottom, thick and dull.

"Wait," she said. "Give it a minute."

The light shifted, and the glass went amber, then a deep sea blue, with a pale gleam running through its middle like a thread of breath. Tom said nothing. The next morning he was out on the shingle before the gulls, with an empty basket of his own.
