Script quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's upper back showing a quotation in black cursive script, reading Everything has beauty, with a second line below it in a much lighter, raised-looking lettering that is barely visible against the skin. The linework is bold and even in the upper line, with the words sitting on a slight diagonal across the frame. The image is monochrome, so colour is not a factor, and the soft, even lighting keeps the focus on the lettering.

Dear Nell, the wind has got under the Tanners' fascia again and lifted the gold leaf off the lower line, so I spent Thursday up the ladder with a brush no thicker than a pencil, trying to coax back what Mr Hollis laid down in 1961. You would have laughed at me. Nobody on Market Street reads the small letters anyway. They are too busy looking at the big ones.

The big letters I did myself in June, with the good sable you lent me before you went south. EVERYTHING HAS BEAUTY runs across the glass in black, bold and even, and people stop to read it while they wait for the bus. Underneath, the second line was always meant to be a whisper, cream on cream, so that only the people who looked properly would catch it. Now it is mostly gone, a ghost of letters you only see when the sun drops low and throws the shadows sideways.
Mrs Tanner asked me on Thursday whether I could make it crisp again. I said I could, but I would have to take the lower line off the glass entirely, and she went quiet and said she supposed it had always been a bit faint. I did not argue. I mixed the size and left the ghost where it was.
This morning a lad with a school bag stopped on the pavement, read the big line, then tipped his head and squinted at the faint one, moving his lips over the words one by one. He stood there a long while after the bus had gone. I think the small letters were doing exactly what Mr Hollis meant them to do.
