Script quote tattoo on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of thin black cursive script on the wrist, reading Not all those who wander are lost, set over two lines. The strokes are fine and even, with a light shaded feel to the letters. The ink is black against pale skin, and the blurred background of trees and ground keeps the focus on the wrist, a white sleeve and beaded bracelets.

Mags Tully had stopped pretending the ledger balanced sometime in March. She sat on the cabin step of the narrowboat Heron's Rest with a tin of lamp oil at her elbow and the chart of the Kennet spread across her knees, its inked rivers gone soft along the folds. Her brother Alfie had left at dawn with the good rope and a pocketful of biscuits, promising to be back before the lock keeper's dinner.

He had been gone eleven days. The village talk ran to the usual: a man who could not sit still, a sister who should have kept him home. Mags folded the chart into smaller and smaller squares, the way their father used to, and found in the margin of the last one Alfie's handwriting, a note that read only Not all those who wander. He had never finished the line. He had never needed to.
On the twelfth morning a bargeman's boy came up the towpath with a sodden envelope. Inside was a scrap of paper: a sketch of a weir, a crooked arrow, and a footbridge she knew from childhood, with the word Here underlined twice. Beneath it, in pencil, Alfie had finished the sentence after all, though the last word was smudged where the rain had found it.
She took the pole down from its hook and pushed off upstream, the chart tucked inside her coat, and did not once look back at the mooring where she had been waiting.
