Anchor tattoo on a wrist

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small anchor with a ring at the top and curved flukes sits on the inner forearm, just above the wrist. The tattoo is drawn in solid black outlines with grey shading on the shank and arms. The background shows a cream knit sweater, a striped multicoloured bag and turquoise jewellery, and the wrist is crossed over the other hand.

Gav Hebden pressed a folded square of greaseproof paper into Maddie's hand before she could ask about his divorce. "You owe me that," he said, and went back to the bar where the lager was warm and the raffle prizes were stacked beside the crisps. She waited until she was in the car park, under a sodium lamp that buzzed like a trapped wasp, before she unfolded it.

The anchor was drawn in blue biro, the ring at the top looped twice, the flukes curled like a pair of cupped hands. They had copied it from a ferry timetable in Year Ten, the four of them, and swore on the end of the north pier that when they turned eighteen they would meet there and Lorna would take them out on her uncle's boat. Lorna never came to the pier. She took a deckhand job on a cargo ship out of Immingham and sent one postcard, a picture of a crane, with no return address.

Inside, the DJ was playing something from 2003 and the tables had been numbered after shipping forecast areas. Maddie found Gav by the fire door. "We never went to the pier," he said. "We kept waiting for someone to say we could."

She walked out past the bins to the seafront, where the wind smelled of diesel and weed. On the sea wall someone had painted a crooked anchor in white gloss, and the rain had already started to run it into rust-coloured streaks. Maddie laid the paper flat on the wet bonnet of her car, weighted one corner with a pebble, and traced the ring with her finger until the ink smudged under her nail.
