Script quote with playing card suits on thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A black script phrase reading curiosity often leads to trouble runs across the thigh, framed by fine black flourishes. Small clubs and a spade are in black ink, while a heart and a diamond are filled in red. The photo is taken straight on, with the tattoo centred below the top edge of a patterned pair of shorts.

The deck had forty-one cards by the time Mirela Quoy noticed the forty-second was missing, and by then the saloon at Gallows Ferry had gone quiet in the way that meant someone was about to be blamed. She sat on the upturned crate by the stove and did not look at the men across the table. Three clubs lay face up beside her hand, inked black and neat as ledger lines, and one spade she had palmed off the dealer's tray an hour before, just to see how long it would take him to count.

It had taken him no time at all. Old Tobiah Renn had been counting cards since before she was born, and he had simply waited, the way cats wait at a mousehole, for her to lift the spade and show him the trick was hers. Now he put his big ham hand flat on the table and said her name as though it were a stain.

She thought about the letter her grandmother used to pin above the stove, the one written in faded brown ink that she had never once been allowed to read in full. Only the last line had stuck: curiosity often leads to trouble. She had always assumed it was a warning about the wrong sort of fellows, or the wrong sort of whiskey.

She stood, slid the spade back onto the tray with two fingers, and smiled at Renn. "Count again," she said. He did, and the number came out wrong in a way that made him swear, and by the time he found the trouble it was already halfway out of the door with her.
