Script quote tattoo on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A multi-line quotation is written in black script and serif lettering across the outer thigh of a person wearing denim shorts. The thin, even linework has soft shading in the capitals and the lettering is set in centred, staggered lines. The image is a close crop in natural light, with the skin tone and ink clearly visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tamsin Ferris had been copying the same card for three days and her hand would not settle. The words came from a battered book her mother had left on the windowsill of the lettering shop on Scarrow, its spine cracked white. The capitals were the difficulty. The big T needed a long swash that curled back under the first word like a wave pulling out, and Mr Abbott would be back on the morning boat with his magnifying glass and no patience for wobbles.

The shop smelled of linseed and wet paper. Beyond the window gulls worked the harbour wall while the tide swung the moored dinghies round on their chains. She dipped the nib, wiped it on the rag and began again: The best day of your life is the one in which you decide your life is your own. Her father had called the line sentimental rubbish, the sort of thing printed for people with money to spare. She had never told him she believed every word.

Mr Abbott came off the Tuesday boat with a parcel of tracing vellum and a cough that rattled the glass. He held the card up to the light for a long time. Then he tapped a place where the ink had pooled. 'Too heavy there. The letters should stand up on their own feet.' She waited for the rest, the remark about her being young, but he only asked whether the kettle was warm.

When he went through to the back, she picked up the pen once more and wrote the last line at the foot of the card, slow and careful: This is the day your life really begins. He came back, read it, and said nothing. He took the card, added his initials in the corner, and slid it into the rack for the morning post. Above the door the old sign still said ABBOTT & SON. Tamsin reached for the brush and began to paint the new name underneath.
