Script quote with red roses flash design

Lettering · Mixed · Flash

A drawn tattoo design of the phrase And Though She Be But Little She Is Fierce in bold black script, set inside an ornate scrolled cartouche. Three roses in shaded burgundy and maroon sit at the corners of the frame, with red drips running down from two of them. The fine black linework and light grey textured background give a clean, printed look, with the lettering as the dominant element.

The oven door sticks in the cold, so I put my hip to it the way Mam did, and it gives with a sigh, as if it has been waiting for me to stop being polite. Half four. The street outside is still ink, and the only light is the orange glow from the deck ovens through the sash, which Mr Pell across the road says makes the window look like a chapel. He is wrong, but I let him have it.

The wedding order is for Harcourt Hall: forty rosewater buns, glazed with honey and scored so the crumb opens like petals. Lorna at the florist's has promised me the last of the damask roses from her cold room, bruised at the edges but sweet enough. I have written the recipe on the back of a seed packet because the card is in Mam's handbag, and the handbag is in the cupboard under the sink, and I have not been able to open that cupboard since March.

Alan Gorse came in yesterday wanting to buy my starter. He offered me a fiver and a share of his van rounds, and when I said no he told me the shop would swallow me whole, that a place this size needs a man's shoulders behind the counter. I told him the shop had never once asked for shoulders. He didn't like that. I was pleased with it, and I am still pleased, which is more than I can say for the rest of the week.

The first light comes up grey over the bins and lands on the honey as I slide the last tray out. The buns have split along their scores and look dipped in something that will not wash off. I wrap one in greaseproof, write HARCOURT on it in capitals, and go out into the street before anyone can tell me what I should be doing instead.
