Infinity symbol with roses and thorned vine
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
The design is an infinity symbol drawn as a grey vine with thorns, curling leaves and small buds along its loops. A large red rose sits at the upper left and a smaller red rose at the lower right, both with soft shading. The linework is fine and detailed against a plain white background, with the grey vine and red blooms balanced across the composition.

The lift in Haverford House had been broken since March, so Marcus carried the box of cuttings up nine flights, one hand under it and the other gripping the rail. Mrs Okafor on the fifth floor had asked him to bring the roses round before the frost. Her late husband had planted the bush by the bins forty years ago, and it had been clambering up the chain-link ever since, throwing out thorns like a grudge. Marcus had taken three cuttings in April, wrapped them in damp newspaper, and kept them in the boiler cupboard where nobody would knock them over.

At the ninth floor he stopped to breathe and looked out over the estate. The walkways were grey and the car park was grey, but the allotment strip behind the school was still green, and someone had strung fairy lights along a fence there. He thought about the loop the council had drawn on the regeneration map, how it had looped back on itself so many times the planners had given up on straight lines. Every meeting ended with the same question and the same answer. Where does it start? Nobody had ever said.
Mrs Okafor was waiting on her step with the door propped open and a kettle already whistling. She took the box without looking inside and ran a finger along one of the thorns, the way you would test a blade. Then she pointed at the cracked concrete beside the bins, where a single bud had split the frost and turned its face to the weak sun. Marcus knelt and pressed the first cutting into the soil. Some things, she said, only ever want to go round again.
