Script word 'always' on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the word 'always' written in a thin, flowing, joined script in black ink across the side of the ribcage. The linework is even and fine, with the shading kept minimal, so the letterforms read clearly against the skin. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a soft-focus background, with a yellow sleeveless top and part of the arm visible.

The petrol pump at Salt Wells has been running on a dying generator since Tuesday, and the phone line went with the storm, so I am writing to you on the backs of the fuel invoices. There are forty-one of them now, fanned across the counter like playing cards. Dell from the haulage yard says the road will open by the weekend, but Dell said that last month too.

Nothing much changes out here except the light. At six the ridge goes the colour of a peeled peach and the cacti throw shadows long enough to reach the bins. I sweep the forecourt twice a day because you told me a clean step makes a stranger trust a place. The dog, Pilot, sleeps under the ice chest now. Lorry drivers stop for coffee and ask after you, and I tell them you are somewhere with a proper post office and better weather.

Under the till there is a biscuit tin full of letters I never posted. I keep meaning to, but every one of them ends the same way, with the word I could never say across a kitchen table without looking at my hands. You wrote it on my birthday card when you were nine, pressing so hard the pencil snapped halfway through, and I have never once believed you meant it any less.

Tomorrow Dell's brother drives the mail run to Coyote Flats, and I have given him the tin. In the last envelope I have written your name and then that word, joined up the way you taught me at the kitchen table, so the wind off the ridge can read it first if the letter gets there before you do.
