Fine line script phrase along the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single line of black cursive script runs diagonally down the side of the torso, reading from the lower left upward. The linework is thin and even, with the letters slightly uneven in places, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the lace waistband at the top of the frame provides a soft contrast against the centred text.

Sit closer to the range, the lot of you, and mind the cat, she's been at the kindling again. Right. Winter on Harrow Fell, the year the beck froze solid to the bottom stone, and Old Dinah Tallis had three ewes missing and a son who would not come in from the snow. Her boy Owen had gone out after the flock at dusk with a lantern and a dog that knew better than him.

He found the ewes at the wall gap below Scar Corner, all three of them pressed together like they'd heard something. They had followed the smell of a fox that was already dead, and they had walked straight into the drift. Owen dug with his bare hands. His heart, he said later, was pounding like a bad engine, and he cursed it for wanting the warm kitchen when the sheep were still breathing under the snow.

Here's the turn. When he got the last ewe up and out, the lantern had gone out and the dog was nowhere to be seen. He stood in the dark and said it plain: my heart is a traitor, because it had been telling him to leave the lot of them and walk down to the lights. And the heart did not argue. It only kept on, steady as a clock, and that stubborn beat was what brought him home, counting the steps down to the gate.

Nobody on the fell ever heard him say it again. But the dog came back at first light, sat down on the step, and waited for him to open the door.
