Scripture lettering across the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo on the side ribs reads 'Let all that you do be done in love', with '1 CORINTHIANS 16:14' set in smaller capitals below. The fine, even linework has flowing loops and flourishes in the lettering, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The close crop shows the tattoo against skin, with a blue top covering the upper body.

Shift up, the wind's come round the north tower again and it'll have your hats off if you let it. Good. Now, Bertram Holm had been mending the curtain wall at Carrow Keep for eleven summers when he and Osric Wenn fell out over a ewe that neither of them could prove was theirs. Words were said across the wet grass. Words were carried to the steward, and from the steward to the lady, and by the time she heard them they had grown a second set of teeth.

For a month the two men passed each other on the stair without a nod. Bertram laid stone on the east face while Osric hauled lime up the ramp, and the mortar set hard between them like a bad promise. Nobody in Carrow ever asked which of them had been wrong. The thing that split them lay forgotten in the rubble, and only the grievance was carried about.
Then came the night the gate-arch cracked in two. Osric was the first up the ladder with a rope, and Bertram was the first at the foot of it with a lantern, and neither stopped to say a word about sheep. They worked until the stone was shored and the sky went grey over the moor.
When the lady came out at dawn she found them asleep against the same block, the lantern guttering between their boots. Above the gate the old carved words had come clear in the first light, cut by a mason long dead: let all that you do be done in love. Now go home, and mind the loose step on the stair. It was loose when I was a boy, and it's loose still.
