Mrs Ashdown wrote the line out for the fourth time before she was satisfied with the loop of the capital A. Her hand ached from the pen, and the ink had thickened in the well because nobody at the Leeds bindery had bothered to top it up since Easter. Ruth watched from the high stool by the window, counting the bobbins on the far shelf so she would not have to look at the paper.

"You are copying it, not arguing with it," Mrs Ashdown said. "Lines like this were never written to be pitied."

Ruth had been called little since her first week. The foreman called her the sparrow, the girls at the presses called her Pip, and on Thursday a carter's boy had lifted her clean off the step to see whether she weighed anything at all. She had bitten his wrist. Mrs Ashdown had not scolded her for it. She only asked whether he had bled, and then handed Ruth the pen.

On the last afternoon before the sampler was framed, Ruth wrote the words herself, small and slanting, in the bottom margin where no one would check. She did not sign it. When the foreman came to collect the work, he read the margin, grunted, and left it alone, which was as close to praise as the bindery ever came.
