Scripture quote along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote reads She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future, with the reference Proverbs 31:25 beneath it. The lettering uses mixed sizes and a handwritten style, stacked in a centred column on the side of the ribs. The ink is solid black on light skin, and the composition is shown close up with the torso filling most of the frame.

The king of Ambry sent three heralds to Lower Sallow before the frost came, and each one rode home complaining of the same thing. The weavers there could not make a cloth that kept the wind out of a man's bones on the high road. Mistress Ide Corrow heard them out from the step of her loom, a mouthful of pins and a ball of undyed wool in her lap, and said nothing until the last herald had finished.

Then she sent her daughter Wenna to the river with the cart. "Bring back the grey stones from the ford," she said, "the ones that stay warm after dark." Wenna grumbled that the thread would tangle and the warp would sag, and that her mother had never once made a plan that did not end with them both soaked to the knees. Ide only laughed and pushed the shuttle through. By midwinter the cloak lay across the table in one long unbroken piece, grey as a heron's back and heavy as a sleeping cat.
The king's steward came up the lane in a blue cloak of his own, sneezing. He tested the wool between finger and thumb and asked what it would cost him in gold. Ide named a price in barley, two sacks and a cow in calf, and he laughed so hard he had to sit on the mounting block. "And if the road is cold?" he asked, wiping his eyes. "Then I will have been wrong about the road," she said, "and you may come back and tell me so, which you will enjoy."
He took the cloak. Wenna watched from the doorway as the steward wrapped it round himself and went quiet, his shoulders loosening like a knot undone. He did not ask about the next winter, and Ide did not offer to tell him. She went back to her loom and sang the old ford song over the warp, loud enough for the whole lane to hear.
