Proverbs 31:25 script quote on ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a multi-line quote tattooed along the side of a torso, with the words set in a flowing black script, the words strength, dignity and laughs enlarged, and the reference Proverbs 31:25 in smaller print beneath. The linework is clean and even, shown in black ink on skin with no colour. The text is centred on the ribs and fills most of the frame, with a grey top and pink strap visible at the upper edge.

The sign on the Quill Hollow diner had been reading OPEN 24 HRS with the second R missing for three summers when Dot Pemberton finally rang a painter in Arrowhead Ridge. Nobody in Quill Hollow expected Mags Okonedo to turn up in a dusty pickup with a ladder roped to the roof and a tin of gold leaf rattling in the glovebox. I was sixteen and the only one on the forecourt who wanted to watch her work.

She climbed up without a harness and started with the S. When I asked why she didn't come down between strokes, she said letters were just strength you put in the right place, and that the wind off the flats would take a sign the wrong way if you let it. The trick, she said, was to laugh at the wind rather than argue with it. Then she hummed something I didn't know, lines of an old hymn her mother used to sing over the washing line, and I watched the black paint go on crisp and even in the sun.
By dusk the sign was finished, black and gold, the R back where it belonged. Dot came out wiping her hands and asked what she owed. Mags said she'd take a slice of pie and a lift to the next town, and that would square it. Dot asked whether she wasn't frightened of the road after dark. Mags laughed, the easy kind, and said she'd driven it with worse things than the dark behind her.
I kept the brush she left on the step. It still smells of turpentine. Whenever the evening sun catches the diner sign, I think of her up that ladder, singing to the wind and not bothering about whatever the road would bring next.
