Jellyfish tattoo on the upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A jellyfish with a blue, watercolour-style bell and dark, sketched tentacles with shaded ribbon-like folds trails down the arm. Small dotted circles and teal splashes sit above and beside the bell, and the second photo shows the design wrapping toward the elbow. The background shows drawn flash sheets pinned to a wall.

Dear Ines,

The bloom came up under the rig on the ninth day of the swell, and I should have logged it the way the manual says, as debris. Instead I sat in the galley with the lights off and watched it pulse across the viewport like somebody breathing through blue glass. Wen says it is only a cold colony that followed the current north, but she says it the way you say a thing to stop yourself saying something else.

The dotted rings on the sounder are what got me. Every ping leaves a small green circle on the screen, and where the bell hangs closest the circles bunch up as if they are trying to get a grip. We tagged forty of them before the cable snagged. Their trailing lines were pale and folded, shaded like ribbon, and when the lamp caught them they looked like something drawn by a hand that had only ever seen the sea in photographs.

I kept one tag. It is in the lockbox under my bunk, a strip of grey mesh with a serial number and a shred of frilled tissue still caught in the clip. I know you will say I am being sentimental, and you will be right. Bring the good tea when you come out on the next tender, and bring the scissors. I want to cut the cable myself.

Love, Marisol
