Before the church bell in the valley had rung, Hanne Villar was already kneading dough in the bakehouse at Corrow, and every morning the stag stood at the orchard gate watching her through the frost. He had antlers like a pair of candlesticks and a pale throat, and he never came nearer than the third apple tree.

Her grandmother said a creature that waits at a gate is owed something. So on the first morning of spring Hanne tore the heel from a loaf, wrapped it in a dock leaf and set it on the wall. By the time the sun touched the ridge the leaf was empty, and in its place lay a white daisy with the dew still on its petals.

After that the trade went on every morning. The stag left a flower and Hanne left bread. Marigolds came in May, then clover, then bruised orange blooms that stained her fingers. The village grew curious, and old Piet crept up one dark morning with a lantern to see what the baker was feeding. He saw the stag lower its head and take a crust from her open palm, and he saw the flowers stacked on the wall like tithes.

Piet said nothing in the square. But in the autumn the bakery sign was repainted with a crowned buck, and beneath it a vine of daisies curled round the lettering. Hanne married the miller's boy that winter. The stag still came to the orchard gate at first light, and the flowers still waited on the wall, fresh as the bread.
