Seated bodhisattva with halo and lotus
Japanese · Colour · Flash
A seated bodhisattva figure sits at the centre with hands held in front of the body, framed by a circular halo and radiating rays. Clouds curl around the upper half, and a row of lotus flowers and small rounded shapes fills the base. The linework is a single even reddish-brown line on a cream, aged-paper background.

He had not seen her come down. Her robe was the colour of old paper, and the cloud around her shoulders curled like smoke from a cold hearth. 'You will not get them over by pushing,' she said. 'Wait for the light.' When he asked who she was, she only tipped her head towards the peaks, where the cloud was tearing open in long pale rays, and the river went quiet enough to hear a goat chewing.
So he waited. When the sun came through, the water shone like a road, and the goats walked over it one at a time as though it had always been there. Tenzin came last. On the far bank the old woman was gone, but the boulder was ringed with lotus flowers opening out of the frost, and the goats had already begun to eat them.
He counted the herd on the far side. Eleven, the number he had set out with. His mother asked him later who had shown him the crossing, and he told her, and she nodded as if she had expected it and went back to the stove.
