The cook on the Marigold had a habit of drawing on the flour before he rolled out the dough, and the boys on the mess deck said it was bad luck to watch him do it. He traced a spiral from the middle of the board outwards, then set a ring of petals around it with the flat of a knife, each one pointed like a tongue. When the bread came out of the oven the pattern had risen with it, and nobody could say how.

Forty days out from Falmouth the wind dropped and the water in the barrels went green. Pell, the youngest, asked why the cook kept making the same bread when they had nothing left to put in it. The cook said the spiral was how you found the middle of a thing, and that if you walked it slowly enough you always came back to the start, only smaller. Pell did not understand this, but he watched the old man's finger go round and round in the flour, and it seemed to him the floor of the galley was turning a little.

On the forty-first morning a grey bird landed on the rail and would not leave. The cook broke a loaf on the table, pulled out the pale centre and laid it on the sill. The bird ate it, then the ring of petals, then the scrolled crust at the edge, until only the dark ring of burnt base was left. Pell said the bird had eaten the ship. The cook shook his head and said it had only eaten the way out, and by noon the wind had come back from the south-west.
