Realistic tattoo of a seated figure within a circular carved stone frame covered in glyphs, on the upper arm near the shoulder.

Seated figure in carved stone relief on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A seated figure in a headdress is shown inside a circular frame decorated with carved glyphs and stepped stone blocks. The shading is detailed and sculptural, with deep shadows and raised highlights that make the stone look three-dimensional. The ink is mostly brown and grey tones with warm reddish areas around the edges of the piece, set against a shoulder and upper arm on a person wearing a white vest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stone was already cracked along its lower rim when the old mason set his chisel to it, and he told the boy so twice before the first blow. It was a round slab from the quarry above the river, as wide as a cartwheel. "Carve the frame first," he said, "and the frame will hold what you put inside it." So the boy cut the stepped blocks around the edge, then the small faces of the day signs, one to each notch, and they came out a little lopsided because his hands were still learning.

In the middle he was to set a seated lord, legs folded, a headdress stacked higher than a granary roof, hands resting on his knees. The boy worked through the dry season with dust in his eyes. Each evening the mason came with a lamp and turned the stone under it, looking for shadows that lay wrong. "Stone is honest about light," he said. "Make the shadow deep where the hollow is, and the lord will seem to breathe."

When the rains came, the crack widened. The boy wanted to cut a new disc, but the old man laid a palm flat on the stone and said nothing for a long while. Then he asked for a thin line of red ochre mixed with resin to be pressed into the split, and he asked the boy to turn the lord's face towards the break, so that he seemed to be listening to it.

Years later the disc sat above the well in the village square. Children ran past and touched the mended rim for luck. The boy, grey now, pressed his thumb into the red line each time he passed, to check that it was still there.
