Helmet, brick wall and eagle shield on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a medieval-style helmet with a raised visor above a brick wall, with a shield bearing a double-headed eagle set into the lower section, framed by foliage at the sides. The work uses smooth shading and fine detail on the metal, brickwork and feathers, giving a strong sense of depth and light. The image is a three-panel composite of the same arm from different angles, all in black and grey ink.

I am writing this on the bench under the clock at Carrowmere Junction, with my case between my knees, because the six-fifteen is forty minutes late and the tea urn has given up. Tomas, you will laugh, but I have been staring at the signal box all afternoon thinking of the gatehouse at home. Every time I close my eyes I see the helmet up on the parapet, its visor lifted as if the old guard had only just stepped out to look at the road.

You remember how Father used to say the wall was built by people who did not trust anyone, and so they made everything out of brick that could be counted. Above the arch, the shield with its two-headed eagle sits in the brickwork like a thing that has been waiting a long time to be noticed. The brambles have grown over its lower edge, and the eagle's left wing still has the chip where Father's chisel slipped the summer before he died. We never mended it. I used to think it made the bird look furious, and now I think it makes it look honest.

Mrs Halloran at the post office says the council wants the gatehouse pulled down for a car park. I told her the helmet alone would be worth more than any car park, and she said the helmet was only ever painted on the wall in her grandmother's day, and I did not have the heart to correct her in front of the queue.

The platform lights have just flickered on. I am going to carry this envelope to the guard and ask him to post it at the next stop, so it reaches you before I do. Look at the gatehouse for me when the spring frost lifts, and tell me if the visor is still up.
