Shaded anchor with rope on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic anchor with a wooden stock and a rope coiled around its shank is tattooed on the forearm. The metal parts are rendered with soft grey shading and dark outlines, giving the anchor a three-dimensional look. The design is shown at a slight angle against bare skin, with a wooden cabinet and light floor visible in the background.

The rope had gone soft as cloth by the time Eli Trevorrow cut it, but he would not let the anchor go to the scrapman until the last fathom was off the shank. His father had coiled it there the winter the Constance Ann dragged her hook across Porthmellow bay, and nobody since had the heart to undo it.

That night in the gale, Eli was sixteen and leaning on the windlass pawl while his uncle Dan swore at the wind. The stock had split on the second setting and the iron ring was singing like a struck bell. Dan wrapped the hemp twice round the shank, cursing every turn, and bent the bight through the eye. The flukes bit sand a little after two. By dawn the boat was still lying off the slip, and Scar Point had its teeth in nothing but weed.
Dan drowned the following spring off the Gannets, and the anchor came home on the cart with the rope still knotted where he had left it. Eli worked at the coils for a week. Every strand had taken the shape of that hitch, so when he finally slipped it loose, the line kept curling back towards the iron like a dog towards its master.
He hangs the anchor now on the wall of his net store, rope and all. On blowy nights he hears the shank knock against the timber, one slow knock for each turn of the tide, and he gets up to check the moorings, though the boat has been lying safe on its chain for years.
