Shaded anchor with rope on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large anchor sits diagonally across the skin, with its shank wrapped in coiled rope and a loose rope loop curling around the stock. Smooth grey shading and bright highlights give the metal and rope a three-dimensional look, while a soft grey halo fades out behind the design. The background shows a grey t-shirt sleeve at the top and a kitchen counter on the right.

The anchor would not go in the boot, so Dilys rode to the harbour with it across her knees, its loose tail of rope trailing over the wheel arch. Her brother Hal kept checking the mirror as if it might roll out at the lights in Newlyn. 'Forty years on that shed floor,' he said, 'and now it's going to a wedding.'

The plan had been Gerald's idea, the groom's father, who had hauled crab pots out of the bay for most of his life and believed a marriage needed something heavy to hold it down. The vows would be said on the harbour wall, with the anchor set at the top of the slipway until the tide turned. Nobody had asked whether it was sensible to stand a hundredweight of iron on wet granite. Nobody had asked much of anything. Gerald had simply started talking, and the village had started nodding.
When the photographer waved them forward, Dilys stepped out of the car and the rope slid off her knees and unspooled across the cobbles. The loop caught round the stock and drew tight. Her niece, Morwenna, dropped to one knee in her ivory dress, lifted the loose end and, with the speed of someone who had learnt knots from a grandfather who never once let her fail, tied a bowline around the groom's wrist.
'Hold that,' Morwenna said. 'It won't come undone.'
Gerald wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and said nothing, which for Gerald was a speech.
