Shaded rose on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a forearm near the elbow, with a shaded rose and leaves tattooed on the outer arm. The rose has soft tonal shading and fine stippled detail around its petals, with darker leaves fanning out behind it. The plain dark clothing and grey wooden panel background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The room was warm, the kettle ticking, and the rose sat in its pot as if it had been waiting for her to leave.

When she came in at dawn, half a lamb was in a crate by the stove and the kitchen smelt of wet wool. On the windowsill one petal had unfolded in the heat, pale at the rim and shadowed at the heart like a drawing done in soft pencil. She did not wake Tom. She filled the kettle, moved the pot into the light, and watched it open.
