Rose sprig tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A sprig of roses with two open blooms, several leaves and a couple of buds runs along the inside of a forearm. The linework is dark and fine, and the petals are shaded in muted reds and greys with soft gradients. The arm is photographed at a slight angle against a knitted grey cardigan, with the rose cluster filling the centre of the frame.

Her grandfather had grafted the bush behind the monastery wall at Vranesh, the only rose that flowered in that cold country, and he had told her a rose would travel only if it kept a little of its own soil. So she had packed the roots in a tin of black earth and wrapped the tin in oilcloth. At the top of the pass, where the cairns were marked with red rags, a customs man in a fur hat asked what she was carrying. She told him: leaves, buds, two blooms that had opened too early.

He lifted the oilcloth with the tip of his stick, looked at the pale red petals browning at their edges, and laughed. "Nothing grows up here," he said. "Go on, then." She went down the far side with the sun behind her and did not stop until the path reached the first stunted pines.

That evening she knelt in a stranger's yard in the valley town, pressed the cutting into a barrel of soft earth, and watered it from a dented jug. Three weeks later a single bud split along its seam, dark at the heart and silvered at the edges, and she sat back on her heels and counted the leaves twice to be sure.
