Shell and bead drape design, line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing on pale paper shows a symmetrical design of a large central scallop shell beneath a curved drape of beaded lines. Smaller shells and loose strands of beads hang from the outer edges, with a lattice of fine hatching under the central shell. The linework is uniform and clean, and the composition is centred with the design filling most of the sheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shells came up the coast in a tin trunk nobody had asked for, and Marguerite Lacey was the only one in Hollin Bay who knew how to string them. Her father had made his living with a bead loom before the mill shut, and she had his patience and not much else. Every evening that October she sat on the harbour wall with the trunk open between her knees, threading pearl-grey beads onto fishing line while the gulls argued over the bait boxes.

The fishermen's wives came to look. Mrs Oddie wanted a necklace for her daughter's wedding. The Pryce boy wanted nothing but to watch the light go through the strands. Marguerite made them all something, and she made each one from a different shell, because the trunk was full of them and each shell had come off a different wreck, or so the carrier said, though he had never once been right about anything.

The largest scallop she kept back. It was ridged like a fan and the colour of old milk, and she could not decide what it was for. On the last night of the month the tide ran so high it lapped the second step of the harbour wall, and she saw the wreck lights out past the breakwater, steady as candles. She wrapped the scallop in a handkerchief, walked to the end of the wall, and dropped it. The water took it without a sound. In the morning a boat came in with its nets full of beads she had never strung, and the fishermen said the sea had been generous, and Marguerite did not argue.
