Heart mandala with dagger and beaded chains
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical black line drawing shows a large heart at the centre of a mandala-style pattern, with a smaller heart inside it and a dagger rising from the top. Strings of dotted beads and teardrop ends hang in scalloped swags across the lower half, framing the central motif. The design uses bold, even black linework on a cream background with no shading or colour.

The bells of Harrowmere have not rung since the Queen's tailor was hanged, so when the Lord Chamberlain sends for you at dawn, you assume it is about the hem of the coronation gown. It is not. He leads you down the salt stairs to the vault where the crown jewels are kept under black cloth, and unrolls a sheet of cream vellum on the table. On it is a heart inside a heart, ringed with rows of small round beads, and a dagger standing straight up from its crown like a finger raised for silence.

"The old king commissioned this for his daughter's wedding," he says. "The stones were to be sewn on by hand. Then the daughter ran off with the ferryman, the king died, and now nobody can remember which of the gems were meant to be rubies."
You trace the swags of chain that droop beneath the mandala, each one ending in a teardrop like a drop of rain that never fell. The lines are so even that you can tell the pen was held by someone who never once hurried. Pinned to the bottom corner is a note in a different hand: Let the dagger point to the true heart. Keep the drops unbroken.
You work until the candles gutter. On the third night you understand the riddle. The dagger is not a warning but a needle. You sew the beads in a single unbroken line, and on the last swag, where the drops meet the heart, you set one dark stone, and the whole pattern settles as if it had been waiting. In the morning the Chamberlain studies the cloth for a long time and says nothing, which from him is praise.
