Shell and lavender on a shoulder

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A spiral shell sits on the upper arm, with several slender lavender stems rising from its opening and fanning up towards the shoulder. The shell is shaded with fine stippling and soft grey tones, while the lavender is drawn with thin, precise linework. The tattoo is rendered in black ink and grey against a dark background, and the photograph shows only the upper back and arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mari Sollen sold sea-glass and shells from a barrow at the foot of Kettle Steps, and every night when the lamps were lit along Marrow Lane she carried one particular shell down to the cistern beneath the fish market. Nobody asked her why. The shell was grey as wet slate, spiralling to a point no thicker than a needle, and it was always cold, even in August.

One November her youngest, Tobiah, followed her down the slick stone stairs. He found her kneeling at the black water with the shell's mouth pressed to her lips, saying a name into it so softly the gulls on the railings did not stir. When she sat back, thin grey stems were pushing out of the opening, each one bearing small tufts of bloom that smelled of a field nobody in the city had walked in a hundred years.

"Whose names?" he asked. "The ones the harbour took," she said. "Men who went out past the breakwater and never came back, a midwife, a girl from the chandlers. The shell carries them up. Every one that reaches the rooftops, someone on the hill stops fretting and sleeps." The stems had climbed past her wrist and onto her shoulder, lacing towards her collar like a bridle of frost.

Tobiah took the shell from her hands, cupped it, and said his own name. The lavender shivered, leaned east, and went up over the chimneys of Marrow Lane, past the lit windows, until it found the one attic room where a lamp had burned for eleven years. Mari watched it go, and for the first time in a long while she did not hold her breath until morning.
