Semicolon and arrows on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a semicolon sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, with a small arrowhead above the dot and a small arrow shape below the comma. The linework is thin and precise, with solid black fill on the dot and arrow details. The black and white photograph is taken close up against a plain, softly lit background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Old Mair Penhallow kept the slate board by the chapel door, the one where the shift men chalked the names of those still below. Each morning she wiped it with a wet rag and wrote the count again, and each morning it was wrong by one, because her son Tom had stayed down after the fall in the Wheal Bess and nobody had come up to rub his name out.

His last letter was folded in her apron pocket, worn soft at the creases. It read: the captain swears the level will be dry by Lady Day, and I have sent the wages on to you; and then nothing, only a small black stop where his pen had lifted when the bell rang for the cage. The old smith had said the mark above it was the shaft, and the mark below pointed down the lane to her door. Mair took that for a kindness, and for a warning too.

The winter went over. Men came up from the Bess one at a time, the ones the rescue gangs could bring out, and each asked for the chalk before they asked for water. She handed it over every time and watched them write their dead in a hand that shook.

On the morning the pumps were stopped and the cage rose empty but for water, Mair stood at the board and wrote Tom's name. After it she did not put a full stop. She drew a semicolon, small and neat, and left the rest of the line bare for him to finish.
