The pearl was the size of a chickpea when Amina first prised it free, and her father Yusuf held it up to the lamp in the kitchen as if it might tell him its price. The buyer from Muharraq had already named his figure twice, and the boat still owed for the season's rope and the new sail. "Sell it," said her uncle from the doorway, not looking at the girl at all. Amina said nothing and let the pearl roll across the oilcloth.

Before dawn she went down to the flats with the shell wrapped in wet cloth. The tide was far out, the mud shining like pewter, and the other divers' children had already raked the sand into neat lines. She knelt in the rock pool where her mother used to rinse the nets. Without its cargo the shell opened easily, its inner fan the colour of a cut peach, ribbed and pink where the light caught the ridges.

She thought about the ledger, the sail that would be sewn from the money, and the long rope that would go slack without it. Then she set the shell on the flat stone and pressed the pearl back into its hollow until the two halves met with a soft click, the way a box shuts when it has been trusted with something. The sun rose over the dunes and the pool turned gold. When her father came looking, the sea was already creeping over the rock, and the shell was closed.
