Red and grey floral tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a central flower with pale pink petals and a dark centre, surrounded by red-tipped petals and grey leaves that wrap around the forearm towards the wrist. The linework is bold and outlined, with grey shading giving the leaves depth and red fill adding colour to the petals. The design fills the frame against a blurred green background and a black leather garment.

The mule had stopped again at the cairn above Scarth Pass, and Nell Ancell knew without looking that it was the third time since Michaelmas. She tugged the rope, muttered at the beast, and looked down at the scree where the wind had scoured the snow. Something pale was growing out of the stones, a flower no bigger than a farthing, its petals the colour of the inside of a shell and its heart as dark as a wet coal.

Her grandfather had walked this route for the Hebble mill, carrying bolts of undyed wool and whatever letters the valley trusted to a man who would never read them. He had told her the pass was never empty. Every carrier left something behind for the next one: a bent nail, a twist of tea, a stone set on another stone. Nell had thought it was superstition until she knelt and found the leaves, grey as lichen, their tips stained red as if someone had dipped them in ink.
The leaves curled round a boulder the size of a loaf, clasping it the way a hand grips a sleeve. Beneath them, half buried, lay the iron ring her grandfather had hammered into the rock to tie his beasts. She worked the frost from it with her thumb and found the ring had rusted into the stone, and the flower was growing straight out of the rust.
She untied the smallest parcel from the mule, a packet of letters for Hebble that would be late now, and tucked it under the boulder beside the ring. Then she cut one stem with her knife, wrapped its roots in wet moss, and buttoned it inside her coat. The mule walked on down the far side as if nothing had happened, and Nell followed it, the bloom warm against her ribs all the way to the lower farms.
