Single-line butterfly on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line butterfly outline with curled antennae sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade, with a looping, script-like flourish trailing beneath it. The linework is thin and unshaded, with consistent black ink and no fill. The photograph is taken close up and shows only skin and a patterned strap of clothing at the lower edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Abernethy's rule was that a line must never be lifted, so the butterfly had to be drawn in one unbroken stroke, from the curl of its left antenna, round the forewing, down through the body and off into that looping tail. I had the brush in my teeth and the ladder rocking against the shopfront on Lamp Street while the last trams sighed past below. Nobody else was awake except the fox who sat on the bins across the road and watched me as if I owed him money.

The shop had sold buttons and ribbon for sixty years. Abernethy wanted something to replace the old board, and he wanted it to look like the insect had only just paused there, as if it might lift off if you blinked. I told him a single line was harder than colour, because every wobble stays on the page. He said that was the point. His daughter had been drawing butterflies on the backs of envelopes since she could hold a pencil, and he meant to keep one on the glass.

By three in the morning my wrist ached and the flourish was still wrong. I scraped it back with the rag, tried again, and on the third go the stroke ran true, the tail spiralling out like a word half remembered. Abernethy came out in his slippers with two mugs of tea and stood in the road holding them, not drinking, looking up at the thin black outline against the lamplight.

He never did put his name over it. The shop closed the next spring and the glass was boarded, but I walk past most nights on the way back from my own job, and the butterfly is still there under the paint, faint as breath on a window. The fox has not moved from the bins.
