Small butterfly on upper back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A small butterfly sits centrally on the upper back of a woman whose dark hair is worn up, so her face is not visible. The wings are drawn in thin black outlines with open, transparent upper sections, and the lower wings are filled with soft pink and red shading. The image is shot from behind against a plain, light background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Tuesday, the thirteenth. Mr Pell has finally given up on the buddleia by the north wall and told me to take the secateurs to it, which I shall do on Thursday when the wind drops. Nothing flies in this wind, which is why I nearly missed the thing on the potting shed door.

It was a butterfly, or half of one. Its upper wings were nothing but veins, clear as the glass in the vestry window, and the lower ones had gone the colour of the rhubarb we forced in March, a pink that looked dusted on, like sugar on a cake. It sat so still I thought it dead until I breathed on it, and then it lifted its wings once, then twice, as if checking the weather.
Pell says they come down off the chalk in late summer and go looking for a wall to die against. I told him this one had picked the wrong wall, because the shed is full of the bulbs I've been saving for Mrs Abernethy's wreath. He laughed and said the bulbs had nothing to do with it. I took the secateurs out anyway and didn't cut a single stem.
By evening it had gone from the door. I found it on the fence rail at dusk, its pink wings closing slowly like a fan. I ran my thumb along the top of the rail and it came away sticky with colour. I've pressed that smear into the back of this book, so you'll see it when you open it. If the buddleia makes it through another winter, that will be Pell's doing.
