Dear Ruth,

The seed came in the same envelope as the gas bill, which tells you how the post regards things it does not understand. It was no bigger than a pebble off Cromer beach, wrapped in a page of the shipping news. Mr Okafor at the chandlery swears his cousin grew it in a tin bath in Lagos, though he said the same about the lemon tree in the back window, and that has been a sulk for two years.

I have put it on the sill above the sink, where the light comes up grey before six. Each morning I check it the way I used to check dough under a damp cloth, one finger pressed gently into the soil. Nothing for nine days. Then on the tenth there was a green thread standing straight up, thin enough that I was frightened to breathe on it.

You will say I am being sentimental, and you will be right. The man on the wireless says the Norfolk wind will pull it flat by October. So I have bought a jam jar of sand and a battery lamp from the market, and I have started calling the thing Dolores, because it looks like it could hold a grudge.

Its crown will not open for years, the leaflet says. A trunk has to make its case first. I think that is fair, and I think it is what I have been trying to tell you since March. Come up in the summer. Stand by the sill and watch the light come in over the roofs. Bring a box of eggs and we will see what it does.

Love, Margaret
