Palm tree on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single slender palm tree is tattooed vertically on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The thin trunk is a continuous line, and the fronds are drawn in solid black with simple, tapered shapes. The plain pale background and soft skin tones keep the small black design as the clear focus of the composition.

The palm has not bent once this winter, Nell, not even when the wind came over the col sideways and tore the refuge sign off its hooks. The larches down the slope have all leaned east like old men at a bus stop, but the palm stands beside the door as straight as a broom handle and looks faintly offended by the weather.

You will remember the tin. Grandmother carried it up on the bus from Motril in her lap, a biscuit tin with the lid taped shut, and inside was a seedling wrapped in wet newspaper and a letter to the forestry office that nobody ever answered. Papa said a palm at two thousand metres was foolishness. She planted it anyway, in a bucket of stones, and it has been outliving foolishness ever since.
The forestry people wrote last month asking whether the tree was on the list for removal. I have not replied. Yesterday I took the tape measure out and marked its height on the door frame, the way Mama used to mark us, and the top of the fronds has cleared the lintel by a finger. Snow lay blue on the path this morning and the dark fronds stood out against it like a single pen stroke on a page nobody had finished writing. I thought you should know it is still growing. Write soon, and tell Papa I said he was wrong about the bucket.
